About
Some of my favorite childhood memories include visiting my grandparents and hanging out with my family. When all of my aunts, uncles, and cousins were there it was a very full house. It was a very modest size house with a grand piano in the corner of the living room that seemed to fill up most of the room. Often one of my aunts would be sitting on the piano benching playing some song from a recent movie. Melodies from “The Sound of Music”, “Dr. Zhivago”, and countless other show tunes would provide a soundtrack to our gatherings. Several years ago, I came across an old upright piano that was mine for free if I could move it out of their house. After bringing it home with the help of my 2 sons, I began pounding on the keys. The melody to this song is what I usually ended up playing whenever I sat down at it. Ask Jeanne how many times she heard it seeping through the floor from the basement. This is my first instrumental song. Up until this point, my usual songwriting process has been: a. find a melody on my acoustic guitar b. try to fit a story/idea(s) within the melody. After finding this melody on the piano, I thought that maybe a song which would be encouraging would fit. The title, “The Best is Yet to Come” came to mind. I worked at it and waited for a long time but no other words seemed to fit. After a while it seemed that any words or ideas I came up with were not enough and/or they seemed to get in the way. Maybe the melody just wanted to do the calling.
