About
I still remember the moment that I wrote Home. It was a typical winter day in Southern CA, a few weeks before Christmas, 35 years ago. A typical winter day in San Diego is a day with temps in the upper 50’s and scattered rain showers. I had been living there for several years and was becoming increasingly homesick. I remember that particular December day struggling to get into the Christmas spirit with the grey skies above and the rain pelting my apartment window. I walked to the nearby convenience store and bought 2 cans of fake snow that you can spray on windows. I sprayed all around the edges of the 2 living room windows and sat down on the floor with my guitar and a pen and paper. I remember staring out the window one moment and then staring down at the paper reading the words to the song. It was one of those rare times, at least for me, when the song was complete before I knew what had happened. This song and I have been around each other so long that I have learned a few things from it. I used to believe that writing songs was something that you could control. I have come to believe and experience that songs are gifts, like many things in our lives. It also seems that this song could be reaching for something more than a twenty-something year old wanting to go back to Cleveland. I noticed that there seems to be a longing that we all have throughout our lives, that we become aware of from time to time. A longing for a better place, a home.
Lyrics
Some people say when you are young
The best of times are yet to come
I’m not waiting for them days no more
I packed up my bags and left my home
Left everyone I had loved for so long
Now home is just a warm spot deep inside me
Out on the road it got rather cold
I’m not talking about the weather
I am talking ’bout my soul
But the Lord, He put a blanket around my heart
I drove nonstop for 4 straight days
Until I finally saw the Pacific haze
The highway sign said, “Boy here’s your destination”
Here I am in some strange land
With 2 bucks in my pocket and guitar in hand
I’m waiting for some entrance door to open
I look into the darkened eyes of frozen souls and hidden lies
I pray to Jesus, keep me covered
I need somebody to keep me covered
I need somebody to keep me covered
I need, I need, I need , I need somebody
I need, I need
Somebody to keep me covered
Lord keep me covered
